Sydney puts herself to sleep every night bu sucking on her brown blanket. It’s a cute little quirk she has had since she was a puppy, and further evidence that she never really grew up.
Sunday afternoon we caught her sucking on the toy elephant instead. It was just as cute, but also entirely funny since she is so much bigger than the elephant!
We were able to take this quick picture before she noticed and started begging for her ball instead.
We had our first foster/adoption home study last night. Thankfully it went well, and the girls were wonderfully behaved. Just a small amount, for a dachshund, of barking! Roxy even greeted the social worked with a kiss on the hand and a tail wag. I’m going to call that a success!
Today I though it might be fun to share a few of the things we do to make it easier on us and the girls when we have guests over.
Tips for entertaining your dachshunds when visitors come over:
1. Give them a new bone or treat to chew on.
2. Fill their toys with food to distract them.
3. Pull out all the off-limits-because-they-eat-them toys.
4. If possible, go for a long walk or throw a ball for a while before the guests come over.
5. When all else fails, smile and move on. They will eventually stop barking, and all dachshund owners know that on one can resist a cute little dachshund!
When cleaning out a closet last week I found a couple of rope toys we have been hiding from Roxy since last summer. She, of course, tries to eat them, so they are usually off limits. But, instead of leaving them in hiding, I tossed them into a basket in the corner – not thinking that the girls would actually find them since they were in a room that is usually blocked off.
Well, Sydney is smarted than I am! Within about ten minutes she had one of the toys out in the living room and was begging for me to throw it for her. Over and over and over and over again.
But, how can you resist that face? You can’t. And I have the sore arm to prove it this morning. Pixie also can’t resist a playful Sydney, so she quickly decided to steal the toy in a failed attempt to get Sydney to play with her instead.
Pixie is just trying to play, but Syd gets pretty upset whenever her toys are stolen. Thankfully Pix gets bored pretty quickly, and soon went back to sleeping under a blanket on the couch, because it is still cold here in KY!
Syd was happy to have her toy back, plus the other two she found with it. She took it to bed with us Saturday night, and played again all day Sunday. We don’t have to worry about her getting overweight!
Sydney’s birthday was yesterday. The little pup is now 4. Last year we took her out for some fun pictures with balloons and her favorite ball. This year it was cold and raining/snowing, so we did the next best thing. Cookies(at her mother’s request) and a ball extravaganza in the loft.
Here she is eagerly waiting for her ball. Unfortunately, she destroyed it within about 5 minutes. So we will be making a trip this weekend to find a new set of racquet balls for her enjoyment. Maybe it will even be warm enough to take them to the park!
Happy Birthday, Syd!
You all know Sydney loves her ball. Because she occasionally destroys them and won’t eat/drink/sleep when she has one, she doesn’t often get to play with them.
Over the last few weeks she has constantly been playing with one of our homemade toys – an old shirt tied in a knot.
She can’t decide if she wants to play or nap in the sun.
They didn’t care that I needed to get ready for work, they just wanted to play.
Pixie and Sydney sleep in their own Dachshund Condos.
This is Pixie trying to wake up in her top floor condo.
This arrangement saves space, and after a year Pixie has finally learned to wait by the door to Sydney’s ‘downstairs’ condo for us to pick her up and put her to bed. For the longest time she would jump right in with Sydney. Maybe she was hoping for a sleepover.
As you can see, the girl is spoiled with several blankets – some of which she likes to sleep under. She also has a stuffing-removed toy lion, monkey, and something that used to resemble an elephant. Clearly she wants to be in the circus when she grown up.
Sydney was no match for this old pair of Gap skinny jeans.
