With Ruthanne and Evan scheduled to come home in just 18 days, and shortly after that to take Roxy and Sydney back, we decided it was time to start looking for a puppy. We didn’t want Pixie to be all alone, and I was pretty sad about the thought of not having Syd and Rox anymore. Its impossible to not love those two!
We have been looking for several months, and just recently found a super cute blue and tan puppy! Her name is Primrose and we can’t wait to pick her up in a couple of weeks. We have already started getting puppy toys and supplies. Something we haven’t done in four years.
My little Pix is cute, but terrified of thunder storms. She is currently hiding under the couch as we have our first big storm of the summer. Storms are worse when you only weigh 12 pounds.
These puppies don’t know it, but they have less than two months left together. On July 18 Ruthanne and Evan will return to American and just a week later they will be in Louisville. After that visit they plan to spend several months in Florida with our parents, and Roxy and Sydney are, of course, going with them.
Poor Pixie isn’t going to know what to do. And neither will I. We have gotten so used to taking all three outside together, feeding them in order – Rox, Syd, then Pix – giving everyone a treat at bedtime. It’s going to be quiet when Pixie no longer has Sydney to play with.
We are hoping to get a new puppy to keep Pixie company. Until that happens we will have to continue our weekly Facetime calls with Ruthanne and Evan, and annoy the neighbors as the girls howl together.
We are super excited to have Ruthanne and Evan home!!! But, we are certainly going to miss having three dachshunds in the loft!
The dachshunds, well two of them, love to eat. But, because they are dachshunds and are prone to back problems, especially if overweight, we limit the amount of food they get each day. When we were growing up our cocker spaniel always had food in her bowl and she ate whenever she got hungry. But, with Roxy, Sydney, and Pixie we limit them to 1/2 cup twice a day.
They are usually okay with this, but sometimes Roxy just gets a little hungry late in the evening and demands second dinner.
Sunday was one of those nights. She sat by her bowl and knocked it around for probably 15 minutes before I gave in and gave her, and the other two, a little bit extra. Apparently that extra 1/3 cup was enough to satisfy her belly because shortly after second dinner all three puppies were asleep on the couch – under a blanket of course.
Syd is taking a nap with her ears up. Makes it easier to hear if someone gets her ball out.
Pix is ready to go out. We had to get some new shirts, but obviously haven’t altered them. Its on the agenda for this weekend.
Roxy had her yearly appointment with the vet last month. She is perfectly healthy, and hasn’t even had trouble with her allergies this year.
But, the vet noticed that her cracked molar looked like it might be getting an infection and wanted to schedule her for a teeth cleaning and possible/probable removal of the tooth.
So, we scheduled the appointment, and per her parents request, asked the doctor to go ahead and removed the tooth if it looked like it would need to be done eventually. We were all trying to avoid another $300 bill in a year or two!
Unfortunately the vet found not one, but two cracked molars, but she decided to leave them both in and we were told that they would be fine for years to come. We are glad Rox still has her teeth, but a bit confused by the vet’s apparent worry about infection and problems only to leave the tooth/teeth. We think this is the ‘problem’ of having a really good vet – they check everything.
In the end, Roxy is worth it. And she, and the puppies, are now banned from ice cube treats. Here is a picture of her when I finally got her home Friday night. She was exhausted, but happy to be home and snuggled on a blanket on her lookout perch.
